Spice and Herb Substitutions

As a general rule, start with half of the amount the recipe calls for (unless directed otherwise), and add the spice until it suits your taste.

Half-and-half

Substitute 1 cup half-and-half… 1 tablespoon melted butter plus enough whole milk to make 1 cup

Self-Rising Flour

Substitute 1 cup self-rising flour… 1 cup all-pupose flour  1 teaspoon baking power 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
